The project, initiated by the Corvo Municipal Council, also aims to “ensure the sustainable use of natural resources and guarantee the harmony between economic and social development of the municipality,” reads an order signed by the regional secretaries of Agriculture and Food, António Ventura, of the Sea and Fisheries, Mário Pinho, and of Environment and Climate Action, Alonso Miguel, published in the Official Journal.
Two coordinated actions are planned, namely the construction of a walkway along the natural area of Barroca and the restoration of the natural pool area.
The proposed intervention for the walkway includes the possibility of introducing endemic flora species, defining circulation areas and resting places for landscape contemplation and bird watching.
The restoration of the natural pool area focuses “on enhancing the natural heritage of the sea/land interface of the island of Corvo, by defining a route to the sea, without neglecting the identity of that location.”
Through these interventions, the local government aims to improve the quality of public spaces, enhance the local landscape, and ensure the sustainable utilization of natural resources on the smallest island of the Azores, increasing the attractiveness of the municipality for both residents and tourists.
The recognition of the project as an Action of Relevant Public Interest takes into account “its importance and that it cannot be realized in a non-classified area under the Coastal Zone Management Plan of Corvo Island and in an area not integrated into the Ecological Reserve,” it states.
The order comes into effect the day following its publication, that is, Wednesday.
