Current health expenditure increased by 8.7% in 2024, surpassing 29.2 billion euros, according to estimates released today by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The INE attributes the activity of public and private hospitals, as well as private clinics and offices, as a “determining factor for this evolution.”
According to the 2024 Satellite Account, the current health expenditure valued at 29,205.1 million euros (2,733.9 euros per capita) represented 10.2% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“The nominal growth of current health expenditure exceeded that of GDP by 2.3 percentage points, contrary to what was observed in 2022 (-6.8 p.p.) and 2023 (-5.4 p.p.),” reads the document published on the INE’s website.
The data indicate that public (which grew by 9.9%) and private expenditure (which grew by 6.5%) increased due to the “reinforcement of activity” in public and private hospitals and outpatient healthcare providers such as medical offices, dental offices, and medical clinics of various specialties.
In 2023, current health expenditure had grown by 4.4%, reaching 26,866.3 million euros, corresponding to 10.0% of GDP and 2,539.8 euros per capita.
