Customers demand “safer, more sustainable food and affordable prices”

Consumers are demanding “safer and more sustainable food at affordable prices,” as revealed by a survey published on Tuesday by DECO PROTeste.

“Many consumers are willing to pay more for food produced on farms that respect the environment, animal welfare, and farmers, provided that European subsidies ensure acceptable prices and credible sustainable practices,” states a released communication.

According to the organization, consumers are urging agricultural policies to promote food production at affordable prices, with reduced use of pesticides and antibiotics, adhering to high environmental safety standards and animal welfare.

The survey in question is a recent European study in which DECO PROTeste participated alongside seven other similar European consumer organizations.

The survey gathered responses from over seven thousand people across eight European countries, more than 800 of whom were from Portugal, with the data “adjusted to reflect the national reality.”

“Only 13% of respondents agree with the statement that the allocation of European subsidies among farms is fair in Portugal. Furthermore, just 17% find the way the CAP distributes subsidies across Member States to be fair,” the report indicates.
