Cybercrimes have led to 250 arrests just this year.

During a media briefing, Luís Neves stated that numerous suspects “are arrested with dozens and dozens of crimes committed.”

At the conference titled “Cybercrime in Focus – Trends and Prevention in the Digital Age,” held today at the Polícia Judiciária headquarters in Lisbon, the PJ director further revealed that cybercrime profits are exceedingly high, reaching hundreds of thousands of euros.

This type of crime falls under the investigation of the National Unit for Combating Cybercrime and Technological Crime (UNC3T), with Luís Neves noting at today’s conference that six thousand inquiries are currently underway.

Neves explained, “criminal organizations are increasingly equipped, more technologically advanced, and have substantial financial resources,” adding that the methods used to commit cybercrimes are becoming more sophisticated.

Regarding the fight against cybercrime, the national director of the PJ reiterated his criticism of the metadata law, claiming it prevents access to data from suspects of this type of crime, thus impeding inspectors’ work.

“The total and unwavering defense of privacy cannot jeopardize the security of our countries, nor hinder the efforts of justice,” argued Luís Neves, noting that the goal is not “to access the privacy and information of law-abiding citizens.”

“We want to access information about those who are suspects, suspected of committing serious crimes,” he stated.
