Alexandra Leitão, the leading candidate from the PS/Livre/BE/PAN coalition for the Lisbon City Hall in the upcoming municipal elections, accused Carlos Moedas, current president and candidate for re-election, of “not knowing how to do politics” without resorting to “personal attacks” on Sunday.
“Carlos Moedas returned to personal attacks. He doesn’t know any other way to do politics. Anyone who listens to him would think he was the first victim of the tragic accident at the Elevador da Glória. He wasn’t. The victims were the dead, the injured, and their families,” wrote Alexandra Leitão in a post shared on the social network X (formerly Twitter), regarding the interview the mayor gave this Sunday to SIC.
The issue discussed involves the fact that the president of Lisbon City Hall expressed he was hurt by the “political exploitation” surrounding the case, accusing the Socialist Party of being “disingenuous” and “cynical” by having a candidate who doesn’t directly call for his resignation but then “assigns all her henchmen and supporters to attack from behind.”
In Alexandra Leitão’s view, this interview by Carlos Moedas was “an undignified exercise for a political leader.”
“The interview he gave to SIC is an exercise in excuse-making hardly befitting of a political leader. It brought no answers, presented no solutions, and announced not a single measure to assist the victims or restore the confidence of Lisbon’s residents in the city’s infrastructure,” she criticized.

It is recalled that the Elevador da Glória in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday, resulting in 16 deaths and 23 injuries, involving Portuguese nationals and foreigners of various nationalities.
