Damiano David sang ‘Out of Place’: “Should have won the Eurovision”

The Italian singer Damiano David hummed a few verses from the song ‘Deslocado’ by NAPA, which represented Portugal in the Eurovision Song Contest, during his concert at the Kalorama festival in Lisbon.

At the moment, visible in the video in the gallery above, the singer began by apologizing for not speaking Portuguese and stated that the “only thing” he knows to say is the song by the Madeira band, which, in his opinion, “should have won” the European competition.

“I regret not speaking Portuguese. I wish I could speak it. The only thing I know is: ‘A sea of people, the different sun, a concrete mountain does not provoke anything’. Amazing music. It should have won Eurovision. After Italy, of course.” he said.

NAPA, who placed 21st in Eurovision, responded to the Italian singer’s performance on their Instagram stories, saying: “Thank you very much, Damiano David.”

Although ‘Deslocado’ finished in the lower ranks of the Eurovision final, the song has become a global success over the past months, reaching the 13th position on Spotify’s Global Viral chart as of this Monday. Overall, ‘Deslocado’ has been streamed more than 20 million times on the streaming platform.

The music’s success is largely attributed to a trend on TikTok, where more than 200,000 videos have been made using the song, accumulating over 880 million views.

Damiano David is the lead singer of the rock band Maneskin, who won Eurovision in 2021 with ‘Zitti e Buoni’. After their victory, the band, comprising Damiano David, Victoria De Angelis, Thomas Raggi, and Ethan Torchio, gained international fame and performed worldwide.

The band’s latest album, ‘Rush!’, was released in 2023, and the artists have embarked on solo projects over the past year. David, 26, released his first album, titled Funny Little Fears, on May 16.

The singer’s debut album, who said “rock and roll never dies” while holding the Eurovision trophy, features a style closer to pop, which has drawn various criticisms. To fans in Lisbon, Damiano David stated that he decided “it’s time to make music.”

“Those who know me know that I come from a different musical genre. I did rock for 10 years, and after this album, I gained many new fans. But many people are also criticizing me because I’m not doing enough rock,” he pointed out.

“I can do whatever I want, whenever I want, and I decided it’s time to make music,” he added.

The artist was the last to take the stage at the MEO arena during the Kalorama festival, which ran from last Thursday to Saturday. Despite the late hour of the performance, which began at 1:55 AM (already early Sunday morning), thousands of fans attended the concert.
