Joaquin Cortés is set to perform on October 16 at the Pavilhão Multiusos in Guimarães and on October 18 at the Coliseu dos Recreios in Lisbon.
Born in Cordoba, southern Spain, in 1969, Cortés began his flamenco dance training with his uncle Cristóbal Reyes. In 1984, he joined the Ballet Nacional de España, where he became a principal dancer and participated in several international tours.
Cortés later established his own dance company, embarking on its first international tour, ‘Cibayí,’ in 1992.
In 1995, he made his film debut in Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘La Flor de mi secreto’ and later appeared in Carlos Saura’s ‘Flamenco’ the same year.
That year, Cortés also conducted an international tour with ‘Pasión Gitana,’ featuring costumes designed by Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani. The tour continued until 1997 when he released an album with his band, the Gipsy Passion Band, performing percussion and featuring his own compositions.
He collaborated with Armani once more in 1999 for the choreography of ‘Soul’ with music by Jesus Bola and Diego Carrasco.
In Portugal, Cortés performed at Expo ’98 in Lisbon and returned to the country in 2005 with ‘Mi Soledad’ in Porto. He came back to the city in 2010 with ‘Calé,’ celebrating 20 years of his career. In 2007, he performed at Lisbon’s Estádio da Luz during the ‘New 7 Wonders of the World’ ceremony alongside Dulce Pontes and José Carreras.
Ticket prices range from 35 to 85 euros in Guimarães and from 28 to 150 euros in Lisbon.
