The Close-Up festival will showcase six feature films by David Lynch, who passed away in January, including ‘The Elephant Man’ (1980) and ‘Wild at Heart’ (1990). An exhibition featuring shooting posters and photographs from the Melgaço Cinema Museum will also be organized.
The program dedicated to the filmmaker will be complemented by a film concert at today’s opening, and a masterclass by American musician and sound designer Dean Hurley, a collaborator of Lynch.
Close-Up will run until the 18th at various venues, including Casa das Artes and Teatro Narciso Ferreira, and features a retrospective dedicated to Portuguese director Margarida Cardoso, whose filmography consistently explores Portugal’s relationship with Africa and its colonial past, according to the organization.
‘The Murmuring Coast’ (2004), ‘Kuxa Kanema – The Birth of Cinema’ (2003), and ‘Banzo’ (2024), Portugal’s contender for an Oscar nomination, are among the films selected for Close-Up, all attended by the director.
Highlighting two additional film concerts, Bruno Pernadas will score Orson Welles’ unfinished 1942 film ‘It’s All True,’ and ARTAVE Symphony Orchestra will perform themes from various James Bond films at the Close-Up finale.
Several sessions are planned for schools, including ‘Retratos Fantasmas’ (2023), a documentary by Kleber Mendonça Filho, and the award-winning animation ‘Flow – À deriva’ (2024) by Gints Zilbalodis.
