“Day to remember History.” Today marks Army Day.

On Friday, October 24, the Portuguese Army commemorates its anniversary, described as a day to “remember the history and exalt the present,” as noted by the institution on social media.

“It is a day to remember the history and exalt the present, to look to the past with respect and to the future with hope. A day to feel proud to belong to an Army that, with honor, discipline, courage, loyalty, and readiness, asserts itself as the guardian of peace, sovereignty, and the spirit of Portugal,” reads a Facebook post by the Portuguese Army.

The post also highlights the day as an opportunity to honor “all those who served within it,” “men and women who daily honor the legacy of D. Afonso Henriques, Patron of the Portuguese Army.”

The Army Day 2025 celebrations began on Tuesday, October 21, in Viseu, featuring a program that celebrates the history, present, and future of the Portuguese Army.

The first day featured the Inauguration Ceremony of the Celebrations at Praça da Sé and the official opening of Expo Army 2025, showcasing the equipment, capabilities, and daily activities of the forces serving Portugal.

This Friday will include a tribute to the army’s patron and a mass honoring D. Afonso Henriques; a concert by the Army Light Orchestra and the presentation of the book “To Arms – Heraldry of the Portuguese Army.”

The celebrations continue until Sunday, culminating in a mass and a military ceremony.
