Deadline for submitting lists with local government candidates ends today.

According to the calendar published by CNE on its website, political parties, party coalitions, and groups of citizen voters (GCE) have until 6:00 pm to submit their candidacies for local elections to the competent district court judge with civil jurisdiction in the respective municipality’s headquarters.

At the end of the day, the submitted candidate lists will be immediately posted at the court building’s entrance, and on Tuesday, the judge will draw the order of the lists on the ballot paper, with the result sent to CNE and the mayor.

A five-day period follows for the judge to review the lists’ compliance with the law and for parties or citizen movements to challenge the process’s regularity or any candidate’s eligibility.

After this step, rectification procedures begin, and by September 1, the rectified lists that are accepted will be posted at the court building’s entrance, although several appeals of the judge’s decision may still proceed to the Constitutional Court.

Candidate lists can withdraw from the electoral process up to 48 hours before the elections (October 9).

The suspension of the electoral roll update occurred on August 13 and continues until the election day.

On October 12, voters will elect the executives and Municipal Assemblies of 308 municipalities. Additionally, 3,259 Parish Assemblies will be elected, 167 more than in the last local elections, due to the restoration of 302 parishes merged in 2012, through the separation of 135 parish unions.
