
In 2023, 2,535 people died due to Covid-19, accounting for 2.1% of the total deaths in the country.
Nearly 56% of the increase in deaths caused by respiratory diseases was linked to a rise in pneumonia-related fatalities, with 5,042 deaths reported in 2023.
The National Statistics Institute (INE) highlighted that 118,947 people died in the country in the year under review, marking a 4.8% decrease compared to 2022, when there were 124,942 deaths.
Cerebrovascular diseases, also known as strokes, were the leading cause of death among residents, accounting for 9,177 fatalities or 7.8% of the total. This reflects a 4.6% decrease from the previous year.
Mortality from cerebrovascular diseases was 86.7 per 100,000 inhabitants, lower than the 2022 rate of 92.1.
“There were 6.0% fewer deaths among residents due to ischemic heart disease (6,414 deaths, representing 5.4% of the total resident deaths in 2023) and 6.2% fewer deaths due to acute myocardial infarction (3,664, representing 3.1%),” stated the information released by INE.
In the category of malignant tumors, 4,490 deaths were attributed to tumors of the trachea, bronchus, and lung, representing 3.8% of total deaths and increasing by 1.8% from the previous year.
Malignant tumors of the colon, rectum, and anus accounted for 3.1% of resident mortality in 2023, with 3,639 deaths—a 1.2% increase from the prior year.
