The spokesperson for Livre reacted on Thursday to the possibility of Luís Montenegro not participating in all the debates between candidates in the legislative elections.
“I would be happy to debate with Nuno Melo… if he were a candidate for prime minister,” stated Rui Tavares to journalists, noting that this is not the case.
He further argued that the debates involving Nuno Melo “have all the dignity and reason to exist,” praising him in this regard. However, Tavares emphasized that at this moment, it should be the prime minister who participates in the debates.
“The prime minister is trying to manipulate [the debates], and we cannot allow it,” he said, adding that the “bar must be set high for everyone.”
Finally, he declared, “I will only debate with Luís Montenegro.”

The decision by the president of the PDS and leader of the Democratic Alliance to only agree to debate with the leaders of the PS, Chega, Iniciativa Liberal, and PCP, while designating the president of CDS-PP, Nuno Melo, a coalition partner, to debate with BE, Livre, and PAN, is causing controversy among party leaders.
