Declarative obligations? Carneiro says that “only” Montenegro can answer.

Following a meeting lasting about an hour and 15 minutes with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa at Belém Palace in Lisbon, José Luís Carneiro was questioned by journalists regarding Prime Minister Luís Montenegro’s opposition to the public consultation of his income declaration. This opposition, according to his office, pertains only to “some elements” involved in the appeal filed with the Constitutional Court.

“Regarding the prime minister’s declarative obligations, it’s a matter on which only he can comment, and it was not a subject of our conversation,” the PS leader responded.

When pressed further by journalists, José Luís Carneiro stated that as a citizen of a democratic state, he expects “the institutions that administer justice to fulfill their duties thoroughly in the demands they make.”

“No more, no less, but the demands that arise from compliance with the law and respect for legality,” he added.

The prime minister’s office clarified today that the request to oppose the public consultation of his income declaration pertains only to “some elements” included in the appeal filed with the Constitutional Court.

“In light of incorrect and misleading news in recent days, the prime minister’s office clarifies that the opposition request regarding some elements in the unique declaration submitted to the Transparency Entity pertains solely to issues included in the appeal filed with the Constitutional Court,” reads a statement sent in response to Lusa.

Luís Montenegro’s office adds that “the prime minister merely made a partial objection to elements that are already publicly known (client list).”

Based on written responses from the Transparency Entity (EpT), Lusa reported that Prime Minister Luís Montenegro submitted requests to oppose the public consultation of his income declarations, which are suspended until a final decision by the Constitutional Court.

These requests were initially reported by Correio da Manhã and confirmed today by Lusa.
