Defendant convicted of child sexual abuse. Parents were accomplices

The ruling, detailed on the Porto District Attorney’s page, indicates that the parents of the victim were sentenced as accomplices to a single three-year prison term, suspended for the same duration, for aggravated child sexual abuse and aggravated sexual acts with adolescents.

The defendants were tried by a panel of judges at the Vila Real Judicial Court, with the verdict issued on June 16.

The offenses involved sexual activities by a defendant, who was the victim’s boyfriend, initiated when she was 13 and continued until she was 14.

The incidents occurred between May and June 2024, at the residence where the victim lived with her parents and where her boyfriend sometimes stayed overnight.

The parents were accused of facilitating the boyfriend, eight years older than their daughter, to stay overnight at their home, thus “aiding in acts of sexual nature with their daughter and accepting this outcome.”

The victim, who exhibited “particular emotional vulnerability,” is currently under institutional care as part of a child protection and promotion measure.

The ruling states that the boyfriend, as the main perpetrator, was convicted of two counts of child sexual abuse and one of sexual acts with an adolescent. He received a five-year prison sentence, also suspended for five years, subject to rehabilitation programs for child sexual offenders.

Additionally, he must pay the victim 3,000 euros as part of the civil compensation set at 6,000 euros, addressing non-material damages caused.

The parents are also required to attend rehabilitation programs for child sexual offenders and to pay 1,200 euros each to their daughter, reflecting part of the civil compensation set at 4,000 euros, for non-material damages caused.
