“It took a long time, the legal systems are very different. Therefore, this is another goal achieved,” said Luís Neves, applauding the handover of Fábio Loureiro at the conclusion of the inauguration of the new premises of the Southern Directorate of the PJ.

Fábio Loureiro, one of the five escapees from the Vale de Judeus prison in September 2024 and subsequently recaptured in Tangier, Morocco, was handed over to the PJ today to be returned to Portugal, announced the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) in a joint statement with the PJ.

The PGR and PJ indicated that Fábio Loureiro, who was recaptured on October 6, 2024, was delivered under international judicial cooperation.

“It was a great effort in terms of international police cooperation, but above all, it was also a significant effort by the PGR, particularly in its area of international cooperation,” stated the national director of the PJ.

In today’s joint statement, the PGR and the PJ explained that the operation received “strong support” from the National Police Corps (CNP) and the Moroccan General Directorate of Territory Surveillance (DGST), “based on credible information from the Judiciary that Fábio Loureiro, for whom an international arrest warrant had been issued, was in Morocco.”

Fábio Loureiro is convicted of crimes including kidnapping, drug trafficking, criminal association, armed robbery, and escape.

The detainee escaped from Vale de Judeus, along with four other inmates, on September 7, 2024, in a well-planned escape with outside assistance.
