Depression Alice on the way to the Iberian Peninsula. Spain on alert (and here?)

Tropical depression Alice is approaching the Iberian Peninsula. This first storm of the autumn season is likely to bring heavy rainfall to Spain, while Portugal is expected to avoid the worst effects.

According to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), although the storm will start impacting the neighboring country from Wednesday night, the “referred depression is not expected to significantly affect the weather in mainland Portugal”.

In Portugal, the only impact from depression Alice between Thursday and Saturday, October 9 and 11, could be “scattered showers in the southern region during the afternoon, particularly in the interior”. IPMA also mentions a possibility of thunderstorms.

The forecasts indicate that the sky will likely remain mostly clear in the coming days, with temperatures reaching 31 degrees Celsius on Friday in Santarém and Évora (and around 30ºC in other coastal districts).

In contrast, Spain is expected to face different conditions. The Spanish state meteorology agency (Aemet) warns on social media of “very heavy and persistent rains” and a “prolonged instability situation”.

The most intense rainfall will occur in the coastal areas of Valencia and Alicante, where “sudden local floods” may happen.

Aemet further reports that the storm’s peak will occur on Friday and Saturday, with northeast winds reaching maximum intensity. The heaviest rains are anticipated in Valencia, Alicante, and Murcia, “where they will be very strong locally, likely torrential, with accumulated precipitation exceeding 140mm in 12 hours”.

The storms are expected to extend to southern Catalonia and also affect the Balearic Islands.
