The mayor of Lisbon spoke at the official residence of the prime minister, delivering a brief statement to journalists at 1:20 PM without taking questions, following his participation in the Council of Ministers meeting. The meeting was held at the invitation of the head of the Government, Luís Montenegro (PSD), beginning around 11:30 AM.
“Anything that can be said at this moment is mere speculation. The city needs answers. On behalf of the people of Lisbon, I am the first to be interested in everything being fully clarified,” stated Carlos Moedas. He mentioned that he asked the president of Carris to initiate not only an internal investigation but also an “external independent investigation to determine all responsibilities as soon as possible.”
The mayor emphasized that the priority at this moment is to support the families: “I want to ensure that the responsible company [Carris] will provide full support to the families.”
“My concern is with the victims, the injured in hospitals, the families who have lost their loved ones. There are no words for such pain,” he reiterated.
