The Elevator da Glória accident, which connects Restauradores to Príncipe Real in Lisbon, has captured international headlines.
In Spain, El País reported, “The derailment of a funicular in Lisbon causes 15 deaths and 18 injuries: the iconic Glória elevator, a popular tourist transport, crashed into a building near Avenida da Liberdade.”
The Spanish La Voz de Galicia highlighted: “Tourist funicular derails in Lisbon: at least 15 dead and 18 injured,” noting the Spanish Foreign Minister stated there were currently “no reports of any Spanish victims or injured.” However, two Spaniards are among the injured.
The British press also covers the tragedy. “At least 15 dead after funicular derails in Lisbon: President regrets tram accident transporting passengers in the Portuguese capital,” noted The Guardian.
Sky News reported on the number of fatalities after “the derailment of the iconic Glória elevator,” as did the BBC.
“Portugal: Lisbon’s famous funicular derails, at least 15 dead and 18 injured,” highlighted the French Le Parisien, which also shared a video.
The The New York Times mentioned “at least 15 dead after funicular derailment,” noting that trams are “a popular attraction among tourists.”
In Brazil, O Globo wrote: “Traditional Lisbon tram derails, leaving 15 dead and about 20 injured,” also describing the funicular as “a major tourist attraction.”

To recall, the Glória elevator derailed this afternoon, causing 15 deaths. There are also 18 reported injuries, and the victims were transported to various hospitals.
Among the lightly injured is a 3-year-old child admitted to the Emergency Room, stable, who will be transferred with the father to Dona Estefânia Hospital as a precaution, according to São José hospital sources.
