Deslandes, Pedro Abrunhosa, and Agir together at the Festival dos Canais in Aveiro

The complete program for the festival organized by the Aveiro City Council, featuring music, theater, dance, contemporary circus, artistic installations, gastronomy, activities for children, and other free-entry events, was unveiled on Monday in a statement.

In the same announcement, the festival director, José Pina, expressed that this edition once again brings together the elements that have contributed to the event’s success since its inception.

“We continue to feature various projects on the city’s canals, content that engages with the territory, and offerings in which community inclusion and participation play a fundamental role. These include areas dedicated to children and premieres, both absolute and national, with local, national, and international artists, in a constant blend of the artistic and the playful,” he stated.

Highlights include a concert commissioned by the Festival dos Canais with Carolina Deslandes, Pedro Abrunhosa, and Agir, as well as a unique performance by Capitão Fausto with the Orquestra das Beiras and the Banda Eixense.

Additionally, Dino D’Santiago, Milhanas, Soraia Tavares, and 47 de Fevereiro are set to perform at the Festival dos Canais, among other musicians.

In other artistic areas, the program includes a large aerial spectacle created by the Belgian company Theatre Tol, commissioned by the Festival dos Canais, merging traditional symbols with contemporary languages.

Also commissioned is ‘Sense of Unity’, the result of a fusion between two companies that have provided significant moments in the history of the Festival dos Canais: DUNDU and Worldbeaters, coming together to present a project celebrating the festival’s ten editions.

Renowned British choreographer Jeanefer Jean-Charles will present “Patois”, a national premiere that explores what happens when two unspoken languages meet: the spoken language of ‘patois’ (French Creole) and the language of dance movement.

Another notable feature is the show ‘The Weight of Water’ by the Dutch company Panama Pictures, which will reflect on current times and the relationship with the environment, presented on water.

The program also includes three absolute premieres: ‘Castle of Ghosts’ by Red Cloud Puppet Theatre, ‘green/light’ by Rui Queiroz de Matos, and ‘Molhos’ by the Kopinxas company.

The Festival dos Canais continues to have a strong visual dimension, highlighted by an intervention from French artist Olivier Grossetête, who will present a monumental installation built during the event with cardboard boxes in a massive community effort.

The event will also feature two of its most iconic spots: A Sala de eStar, transforming Praça da República into a domestic space, and Funky Beach, an urban beach. Both will be ideal meeting points with bar service, concerts, and DJs.

Children and families will again be treated to various proposals, with the Jardim das Brincadeiras providing a welcoming, fun space filled with creative activities.

As in recent editions, the Festival dos Canais will host a ‘pop-up’ of Chefs On Fire, a gastronomic event inviting renowned chefs to cook slowly, celebrating the roots of cuisine.
