Detained after breaking a shop window to steal tobacco. Had an “extensive history”

A 44-year-old man was arrested on December 2 after breaking into a commercial establishment to steal several tobacco packages valued at approximately 4,000 euros, along with 550 euros in cash from the cash register in the Belém district of Lisbon. The suspect reportedly had “an extensive criminal history.”

“Following a report, officers immediately proceeded to the scene, surprising and intercepting the suspect inside the establishment, after he broke the window to gain entry,” stated the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) in a communiqué sent to newsrooms on Sunday.

Authorities seized not only the tobacco packages and cash taken from the register but also the “vehicle used by the suspect” and “various objects” believed to have been “used in the execution of the crime.”

The PSP also discovered that the individual was “suspected of committing other property crimes already reported in the city.”

“It was possible to link the suspect to three thefts from vehicles, including two motorhomes, and one theft from inside an establishment, the latter also carried out on the morning of December 2,” they detailed.

Furthermore, according to authorities, the man “already has an extensive criminal record, including prison sentences for various crimes.” The assailant was under the coercive measure of reporting to the police station in his area of residence, an obligation he had not fulfilled.

After his arrest, the man was brought before a judicial hearing and has been remanded in custody.

The PSP reaffirmed their “firm commitment to combating crime, acting quickly, concertedly, effectively, and determinedly in the protection of people and property.”
