A 21-year-old man was arrested on Sunday in Cova da Moura, Amadora, after being found in possession of drugs and driving a stolen car for which he did not have legal authorization. During the incident, officers were targeted by bottle-throwing, prompting them to fire shots. No injuries were reported.
A statement released on Monday detailed that the situation unfolded when, during a “specialized and directed patrol,” officers of the Public Security Police (PSP) became aware of a stolen vehicle circulating in the Águas Livres parish, with the license plate and characteristics provided.
According to the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP (Cometlis), the officers mobilized to the specified location “to attempt to intercept the vehicle, and upon entering the Cova da Moura area, identified several ongoing parties with dozens of people in the streets, locating the stolen vehicle moving towards the police car.”
“Faced with this, the officers approached the vehicle to find the driver without legal authorization,” notes the statement. “During the approach, approximately 347 individual doses of hashish divided into 50 packages and €966.10 in cash were found in the man’s possession, and all this material was seized.”
According to Cometlis, “the officers faced resistance to police action, being targeted by glass bottle-throwing, necessitating the use of low-lethality coercive means to safely exit the location.” Cometlis clarified to Notícias ao Minuto that anti-riot weapons with low-lethality ammunition were used, with shots fired without endangering lives.
The man will be presented this Monday to the Judicial Court of the Comarca da Amadora following his arrest for robbery, drug trafficking, theft and use of a vehicle, and driving without legal authorization, and the recovery of a stolen vehicle. The drugs and the vehicle were seized.
