Relatives of the 38-year-old Scottish tourist found dead on Wednesday after being missing for a week in Albufeira have expressed gratitude to “everyone” involved in the search efforts, admitting they are “absolutely devastated” by the outcome.
Greg Monks was discovered lifeless in a “wasteland and very rugged” area of Cerro da Águia, confirmed by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ), which stated that the body will now be autopsied.
The man’s sisters, Jillian and Carlyn, took to a Facebook page they had created while their brother was missing to respond to the tragic news.
“I didn’t think it would end like this… We are absolutely devastated! Greg was a fantastic guy, loved by everyone, a friend to all, and always made us laugh! We will miss him every day,” wrote Jillian, in a post identifying Carlyn.
“I just want to thank everyone for everything they’ve done, from sharing posts to searching and calling everywhere to obtain CCTV footage,” she added, noting that the family has received support “out of this world.”
“If love could have saved you, you would live forever,” she concluded.
The Scottish man disappeared on May 28 after traveling to Albufeira for a stag party.
Friends lost sight of him in the early morning hours during a night out and reported him missing to authorities after he never returned to their accommodation.
According to the family, footage from two different CCTV cameras showed him walking in a residential area, specifically in Cerro de Águia, where he was ultimately found deceased. This area, where he was last seen around 03:27, featured rugged terrain, including rocky outcrops and cliffs and was more than an hour’s walk from Rua da Oura, where friends lost sight of him.
