DGArtes: 109 projects supported in the Internationalization competition

The Directorate-General for the Arts (DGArtes) will support 109 projects with 1.035 million euros under the 2024 Internationalization Project Support Program, set to be executed this year, it was announced today.

The final results, released today on the official DGArtes website, indicate that 109 applications will be supported out of 149 admitted to the competition. There are 40 applications not receiving support, ten for falling below the minimum required score of 60%, and 30 due to the depletion of available funds.

This competition funds the international circulation of 109 projects across 51 countries in Africa, Asia, America, and Europe, including Brazil (set to host 44 projects), Spain (17), Japan (11), France (10), Mexico (9), Cape Verde (8), Italy (6), Angola (5), and São Tomé and Príncipe (5).

“Activities will be carried out in the fields of Music (45), Theater (24), Dance (12), Visual Arts (12), Cross-Disciplinary (8), and Photography (4), followed by the areas of Design (2), Circus (1), and Street Arts (1),” reads the site.

According to DGArtes, this competition saw an increase of over 13% in supported projects compared to the previous competition, which supported 96 projects.

The opening notice for the Internationalization competition states that “projects must be executed within a maximum of 18 months, from September 1, 2025, to February 28, 2027,” and that “project expenses deemed eligible may be carried out between July 1, 2025, and February 28, 2027.”

The six Project Support Program competitions for 2025 present a total of 13.35 million euros, an amount unchanged from the competitions that opened in 2023 for execution in 2024.

The Visual Arts competition has a budget of 2.33 million euros, Music and Opera 3.37 million euros, Internationalization 1.035 million euros, Creation and Publishing 4.015 million euros, Programming 1.910 million euros, and Simplified Procedure 690,000 euros.

On July 7, the association Plateia warned of delays, “for another consecutive year,” in the announcement of the results for the Project Support and Simplified Support competitions.

The final results of the Simplified Procedure were released the following day. This year, 146 artistic projects will be supported, 22 more than the previous edition, but 292 eligible applications were left out due to the depletion of the available 690,000 euro fund.

On July 10, the director-general for the Arts, Américo Rodrigues, told Lusa that the delay in announcing the results of the support competitions is a consequence of the increase in applications, as they grew “by more than 30%” compared to the previous year.

Américo Rodrigues acknowledged that the situation “concerns artists,” but assured that “DGArtes makes every effort to communicate the jury’s decisions as soon as they are presented.”

The juries are another factor influencing the waiting times for the process conclusions, as in addition to internal professionals, these groups also include “external people, specialists,” resulting in “different dynamics and work rhythms from commission to commission.”

The Visual Arts, Music and Opera, Internationalization, Creation and Publishing, Programming, and Simplified Procedure competitions for 2025 were supposed to have opened by the end of December last year but started on January 15, closing on February 26.

According to the opening notices, for the Simplified Procedure, Visual Arts, Music and Opera, Creation and Publishing, and Programming competitions, “projects must be executed within a maximum of 18 months, from July 1, 2025, to December 31, 2026.”
