According to the final results released today on the official website of the Directorate-General for the Arts (DGArtes), out of the 418 applications admitted to the competition, 128 will receive support (124 in Music and four in Opera).
There are 290 applications that will not receive support, with the majority (262) rejected due to the depletion of the total available amount of 3.37 million euros, while 28 fell below the required minimum score of 60%.
The DGArtes noted that the final decision on the competition was communicated to the applicants today.
The DGArtes states that the funding reaches all regions of Portugal, with 47 projects supported in the North, 32 in the Center, 26 in Greater Lisbon, six in Alentejo, five in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, four in the West and Tagus Valley, four in the Algarve, two in the Setúbal Peninsula, and two in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
In terms of artistic area, 41 creation projects, 31 publishing projects, and 56 programming projects are supported.
The DGArtes explains that financed activities in the realm of creation include the conception, execution, and public presentation of works, artistic residencies, and performances.
“In the domain of programming, supported activities include festivals, receptions, co-productions, and artistic residencies, and in the domain of publishing, they include support for the publication of works in physical or digital format with the aim of their dissemination,” the statement reads.
The projects supported in this program will run until December 31, 2026, DGArtes recalls.
According to the announcement for the Music and Opera competition, “the projects must be completed within 18 months, between July 1, 2025, and December 31, 2026.”
The six competitions of the 2024 Project Support Program, to be implemented this year, present a total of 13.35 million euros, an unchanged amount compared to the competitions that opened in 2023 for execution in the following year.
The Visual Arts competition has an allocation of 2.33 million euros, the Music and Opera competition 3.37 million euros, the Internationalization competition 1.035 million euros, the Creation and Publishing competition 4.015 million euros, the Programming competition 1.910 million euros, and the Simplified Procedure 690,000 euros.
The competitions were supposed to have opened by the end of December last year, but they opened on January 15, closing on February 26.
The final results of the Simplified Procedure were released on July 8. This year, 146 artistic projects will be supported, 22 more than in the previous edition, but 292 eligible applications were not funded due to the depletion of the total available amount of 690,000 euros.
On July 16, the final results of the Internationalization competition were announced. This year, 109 applications are supported out of the 149 admitted. There are 40 applications that will not receive support, ten for falling below the required 60% minimum score, and 30 due to the depletion of the available amount.
On August 14, it was publicly announced that in the Programming competition, 76 projects will be supported, with 56 applications excluded due to lack of funds.
In the Visual Arts competition, whose final results were released on August 26, 94 artistic projects will be supported, with 123 not supported due to the exhaustion of the available amount for the artistic area.
In the Creation and Publishing competition, whose final results were disclosed on September 4, 161 projects will be supported, with 250 not funded due to lack of resources.
Organizations representing the sector have repeatedly warned about the underfunding of DGArtes’ support competitions.
When last year’s project support competition results were revealed, dozens of structures again did not receive funding, even though they were considered eligible for support. The same situation is happening this year.
