A report aired by SIC on Wednesday highlights accusations from the NGO ARDE Global of mistreatment and negligence at a pig farm operated by Intergados, a subsidiary of the Montalva group.
The Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary (DGAV) announced, “An official inspection of the site was conducted today to investigate the claims presented […]. This inspection confirmed non-compliance in areas including facilities, animal handling, hygiene, and biosecurity.”
Following the inspection, mandatory corrections were prescribed for the operator, although these have not been detailed publicly.
“The DGAV will continue to monitor the implementation of these corrective measures and may enforce additional actions as stipulated by legislation if necessary,” the agency stated.
The farm currently holds a certification for animal welfare.
Welfair, the organization responsible for awarding the animal welfare seal, conducted a surprise investigation and audit of the facility earlier this month.
After this review, Welfair decided to maintain the certification, emphasizing in a response received this afternoon that not all images broadcasted relate to the Santarém district farm.
“The video aired by SIC combines scenes of pig farming with footage of duck farming, wherein clear mistreatment is evident,” they noted.
Intergados has been contacted for comment, and a response is awaited.
