DGS and GNR join to advise the population about the heat

The Directorate-General for Health (DGS) and the National Republican Guard (GNR) launch today various initiatives to promote health best practices among the population during the summer season, especially due to the heat.

In a statement, the involved authorities explain that these initiatives are part of the summer module of the ‘Health Promotion Project,’ launched in July 2024, which aims to empower GNR military personnel to share health best practices with the population.

In the initiatives now underway, considering the high temperatures affecting mainland Portugal, the importance of hydration for all ages will be emphasized, with a special focus on senior citizens belonging to at-risk groups.

The project aims to reach all regions of the country, promoting “a preventive health culture in close proximity to communities.”

Considering the heatwave, the DGS highlights the importance of intensifying this joint effort, leveraging GNR’s community engagement to facilitate public adherence to health best practices, promoting health literacy, allowing citizens to make more informed decisions, and reducing social isolation.

To carry out this initiative, GNR personnel underwent training provided by the DGS, focusing on the physiological impact of heat, communication and behavioral activation strategies, as well as preventive measures to adopt during this seasonal period.
