This Sunday, a striking formation of clouds amazed the residents of Elvas, Marvão, and Monforte. Initially perceived as holes in the sky, these formations are identified as fallstreak holes, a rare meteorological phenomenon.
The appearance of these clouds captured the attention of locals and onlookers in at least these three locations, as noted by the Facebook page Meteo Trás os Montes, which shared several images submitted by its followers.

Beautiful and captivating, these clouds signify an uncommon occurrence. Fallstreak holes appear when water temperatures in clouds are below freezing, causing ice formation. The surrounding droplets evaporate, creating a large hole in the cloud.
Known as “Hole Punch Cloud” in English, this formation occurs when part of the cloud layer freezes into ice crystals and descends, creating a central hole, as explained by MetSul Meteorologia.
These fallstreak clouds often have a distinct circular or oval shape and tend to attract attention, frequently appearing on social media platforms, as was the case in Portugal this Sunday.
