The circulation of trains is halted due to a strike by CP – Comboios de Portugal, a situation expected to extend over the next few days. Caught by surprise and worried about arriving late to work? This article addresses your concerns.

“One of the main disruptions caused by the public transport strike is not arriving at work on time. In these instances, you have the right to request from the public transport operator a certificate that verifies the delay and its duration, or a document confirming the strike,” explained lawyer Dantas Rodrigues in his segment on Notícias ao Minuto, ‘Trabalho e Impostos (Des)complicados.’

However, it is important to stress that employers are not obligated to accept this certificate as a justification for absence.

“Therefore, if you arrive late to work due to a public transport strike, you may be given an unjustified absence, with corresponding consequences, such as loss of salary,” the lawyer explained.

“Since strikes must be communicated in advance, you should pay attention to these notices and appeal to your employer’s sense of reason to find solutions for potential delays, such as teleworking, if your job allows it,” he concluded.
