“Different people” talking about what matters: housing, wages, prices

The leader of Portugal’s Bloco de Esquerda, Mariana Mortágua, submitted the party’s candidate lists for the upcoming snap legislative elections on Monday morning, highlighting their representation of major national issues and social movements.

“Environment, climate, feminism, freedom for Palestine, and anti-racist movements. Diverse individuals who embody the wide-ranging diversity in Portugal and the hope for a better, fairer country. These lists and our program are essentially the same: a distinct campaign to engage people directly and discuss pressing issues such as the housing crisis, wages, and prices,” Mortágua stated outside the Palace of Justice in Lisbon.

When asked about recent polling results, Mortágua expressed confidence that Bloco de Esquerda would “gain more traction in the upcoming elections”.

“We recognize that today’s world demands more. Portugal now has more millionaires alongside rising poverty, and the housing crisis is a reflection of this reality. We aspire to meet these demands. The program we’re presenting contains very straightforward yet determined proposals,” the BE coordinator added.

On Sunday, Bloco de Esquerda unveiled six policy measures as part of its electoral platform addressing the housing crisis. These initiatives aim to streamline rental laws, empower tenants to report contracts without fear of retaliation, and impose a moratorium on new hotel constructions.
