Expressing his views to journalists at the Assembly of the Republic, following the session commemorating 50 years since November 25, 1975, Nuno Melo asserted that “November 25, in truth, completes April” and noted he would emulate the centrist parliamentary leader’s gesture. This leader, prior to his speech, removed a white rose from the podium’s floral arrangement and placed it among the red carnations positioned by other deputies.
“Moments are made of symbols. I believe this white rose well symbolized today the spirit of celebrations aimed at uniting, aimed at uniting Portuguese society, the military family, and fortunately, they have proceeded with much dignity, first with a military ceremony at Terreiro do Paço, now here at the Assembly of the Republic,” stated the Minister of Defense, pointing out that he would preside over a commemorative ceremony of November 25 at the Commando Regiment.
Nuno Melo also mentioned that the committee promoting the commemoration of the military operation on November 25, 1975, established by the Government and announced by him, “will continue its evocative work of November 25 related to April 25, at least until mid-2026.”
On the occasion, the Minister of Defense was also asked about reports indicating that Ukraine might have accepted the peace agreement proposed by the United States of America.
“I am not yet aware of the exact terms of what has been accepted. Nonetheless, I would say peace is always good news. The terms of peace, being accepted by the Ukrainians, certainly will not imply a capitulation. In any case, we must wait. Regardless, the end of conflict, the end of death, but mainly with respect for international law and the dignity of the Ukrainian nation, are obviously fundamental. We shall see what the next few hours bring,” he stated.
Nuno Melo further said he had no official confirmation of the news reported by CBS News, citing an official White House source, and mentioned only having seen the news through the media.
