The event organized by the Aveiro City Council, celebrating its tenth edition this year, includes music, theater, dance, new circus, artistic installations, children’s activities, and other proposals promising to transform the city’s daily life.
A highlight of this edition is the water-themed performances, among which is ‘The Weight of Water’ by the Dutch company Panama Pictures. Described as a “parable on global warming with six performers and a floating platform,” this performance will be seen at the Canal Central near the sluices on July 19 and 20.
In the music segment, the first announced performer is Dino D’Santiago. The singer, known for blending Cape Verdean tradition with contemporary global electronic influences, will open the event on July 16 at the main stage of the Festival dos Canais, located at Cais da Fonte Nova.
In terms of premieres, the performance verde/claro by Rui Queiroz de Matos marks the first example, also a commission by the Festival dos Canais. It will be showcased daily throughout the event, featuring four presentations each day.
The organization notes, “It is a puppet creation that celebrates nature in its most intimate scale and questions spectators on how life would be if human beings were only a few millimeters tall.”
As in previous years, the event will engage the community in some activities, such as the Fanfarra dos Canais, a mobile musical formation recruiting through an open call, with registrations opening soon.
The program further includes various performances and activities for children and families, which will occur at the Jardim das Brincadeiras space in Baixa de Santo António.
Continuing the trend from recent years, the Festival dos Canais will feature a pop-up of Chefs On Fire, a gastronomic event inviting renowned chefs to cook with slow fire, celebrating the roots of cuisine.
The full program for the Festival dos Canais will soon be presented and made available on the event’s official website.
