The Bishop of Santarém, José Traquina, expressed his warm welcome to the newly elected Pope, Leo XIV, describing his ascension as “a great gift” on the diocese’s website. He affirmed that “in communion with the entire Church, the election of the new Pope Leo XIV is celebrated with joy.”
“With joy and in the spirit of ecclesial communion, the Bishop of Santarém, in his role as the diocesan pastor, proclaims his fidelity and obedience to the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV,” the message concluded.
American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, was elected Pope on Thursday after a two-day conclave and has taken the name of Leo XIV.
Born in Chicago, USA, Prevost has Spanish ancestry, holds Peruvian nationality, and is a member of the Order of St. Augustine. He previously served as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.
Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88.
