“It was with deep sorrow that I learned of the death of Corporal Pedro Manata e Silva, a GNR officer who lost his life in the line of duty during an anti-drug trafficking operation on the Guadiana River,” lamented José Luís Carneiro in a social media post.
Having worked closely with the GNR during his tenure as Minister of Internal Administration, the socialist leader stated he knows “well the professionalism, courage, and sense of mission of these men and women.”
“To the family, friends, and the National Republican Guard, I send my solidarity and heartfelt condolences. The country must always honor those who risk their lives in service of our collective safety,” he emphasized, expressing gratitude to the soldier who lost his life.
The Minister of Internal Administration promised today that the Government “will do everything” to apprehend the perpetrators of the crime that resulted in the death of a GNR officer in the pursuit of a fast boat suspected of “drug trafficking.”
Maria Lúcia Amaral made a statement to journalists at parliament, minutes before the start of the second and final day of general debate on the State Budget proposal for 2026.
“The Government wants to make a solemn commitment to do everything, particularly in coordination with Spanish authorities, to apprehend the perpetrators of this crime,” she stated without taking questions from the media.
A GNR officer died, and three were injured on Monday night after the vessel they were in was rammed by a high-speed boat detected on the Guadiana River, which the guard suspects is related to drug trafficking.
