Discussion on Nationality Law postponed: “We need more time”

The PSD requested a delay on Thursday regarding the discussion of the Nationality Law proposal, which was initially scheduled for this afternoon in Parliament. Speaking to journalists, Hugo Soares explained, “We all need more time to reach the broadest possible consensus for a very important law, and for this reason, we suggested the meeting take place tomorrow.”

“It is merely a matter of needing more time to seek broader consensus for this law,” reiterated the PSD’s parliamentary leader.

When asked if the negotiations on this matter were becoming more complicated, Hugo Soares responded, “It is not about them being more difficult or easier,” emphasizing, “I have always said that the responsibility I impose on myself and the PSD Parliamentary Group is that I do not discuss ongoing negotiations in public.”

“I made this exception solely to tell you what I said yesterday: the negotiations are underway, discussions are happening. We need more time. And I believe that time should not prevent us from seeking the broadest consensus on matters like the Nationality Law,” he further stated to journalists, adding, “What we want is to have a Nationality Law that aims at the objectives we proposed from the outset but receives the widest support from parliamentarians in the Assembly of the Republic.”

“There is no mystery,” Hugo Soares stressed.
