Dissident from PSD ends long orange reign in Esposende

The movement named “Mudança” presented Alberto Figueiredo as the top candidate for the Municipal Assembly, a former PSD member who previously served as the mayor of Esposende for ten years.

Dr. Carlos Silva is now the new mayor of Esposende, governing with an absolute majority. He managed to elect four members to the executive, against three from the PSD.

“It’s a change that will be made with everyone, by everyone, and for everyone,” Carlos Silva stated in his victory speech.

He emphasized that his priority will always be the people and that under his leadership, the Esposende City Hall will be “open and transparent.”

“We also will not tolerate any city hall employee feeling oppressed anymore,” he added.

Attempts to reach the outgoing president, Guilherme Emílio, were unsuccessful.

In the outgoing term, Carlos Silva was the president of the Esposende Municipal Assembly, elected by the PSD, but resigned in early 2025 after the party allegedly failed to fulfill a promise that he would be the candidate for mayor.

The social-democratic list was led by Guilherme Emílio, who had been leading the Esposende City Hall since August 2024, succeeding the elected president in 2021, Benjamim Pereira, who left for the Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU).

Carlos Silva received 11,566 votes, while Emílio Figueiredo secured 8,257.

Currently, the Esposende executive is composed of six PSD members and one PS member.
