The National Federation of Doctors (FNAM) has demanded the reconstruction of the National Health Service (SNS), calling for improved professional conditions for doctors, as the state healthcare system marks its 46th anniversary.
“Instead of investing in a strong, universal, and accessible SNS, the government of Luís Montenegro chooses to maintain chronic underfunding, pushing professionals out of the public service and making way for private entities, which are waiting for the return on the announced investment of a billion euros,” FNAM criticized.
In a statement titled “FNAM warns: Rebuild or lose it forever,” leaders of this professional organization argue that “the base salary of doctors remains inadequate given the responsibility and demands of the profession,” lamenting that the profession must “‘sustain the service,’ but without dignified conditions to do so.”
“This is why more and more doctors are leaving the SNS. It is also why FNAM insists: without stable and attractive careers, there will be no future for the SNS,” the statement continues.
FNAM seeks “the immediate opening of serious negotiations” as it believes “time is running out.”
“The quality of healthcare demands time, stability, and valued professionals — not endless overtime or imposed objectives like in a factory,” it reads further.
