The event, organized by Apordoc — Association for the Documentary, with support from the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA), Ministry of Culture, and Odemira Municipality, will take place from November 14 to 19, bringing together filmmakers and professionals from around the world.
This year’s seminar, titled “An Unarticulated Collective Harmony,” inspired by a verse from poet Sean Bonney, will explore “the political history of the Alentejo, particularly the process of land and labor collectivization that profoundly marked the region during agrarian reform,” according to a statement from Odemira Municipality.
In 2025, Doc’s Kingdom is curated by Raquel Schefer and Rita Morais, focusing on “collective cinematic practices, in dialogue with historical and contemporary moments of documentary cinema,” the statement noted.
The event will feature participation from cinematic collectives including Grupo Zero (Portugal), Ogawa Productions (Japan), CAMP (India), Sueli and Isael Maxakali with collaborators (Brazil), and Video Tracts for Palestine (transnational anonymous project).
The opening session of Doc’s Kingdom is scheduled for November 14 at 5:00 PM at the Camacho Costa cine-theater in Odemira.
Prior to this, at 3:30 PM, the exhibition “Liquid Deserts” will be inaugurated at Espaço CRIAR, showcasing research work on the Alentejo, conducted in collaboration with London’s Royal College of Art, UK, and CACO — Artisans Association of Odemira Municipality.
The event’s program also includes, over six days, several free sessions open to the public, held at the Camacho Costa cine-theater, featuring “impactful films followed by discussions and conversations with the directors,” the statement confirmed.
To mark the 25th anniversary of Doc’s Kingdom, parties are scheduled in Odemira’s Municipal Market on November 15 and at Quintal da Música on November 18, both at 10:00 PM.
