A pitbull entered the playground of the Escola Básica e Jardim-de-Infância do Outeiro in the Rio Meão parish and bit a child under the arm, resulting in her hospitalization at São Sebastião Hospital in the same municipality, located in the Aveiro district and Porto Metropolitan Area.
The eight-year-old girl is recovering well but is undergoing antibiotic treatment to prevent infection risks.
“As of now, the owners of the dog in question have yet to present themselves at the Intermunicipal Kennel of the Association of Municipalities of Terras de Santa Maria with the dog, for compliance with the legally mandated quarantine following such attacks,” a source from the Feira Municipal Council disclosed.
Since the dog’s owners did not comply with legal requirements, “it is now up to the competent authority, namely the GNR, to take subsequent measures.”
For further clarifications, Lusa contacted the district command of the GNR this afternoon, but they were unavailable for comment.
According to the municipal council, the pitbull that attacked the child in Rio Meão “lacks an identification microchip and rabies vaccination.”
Given these circumstances, the mandatory veterinary quarantine can be conducted “only at an official collection center, at the respective owner’s expense.”
