The Porto Territorial Command explained in a statement that the arrest was carried out by the Penafiel’s Specific Victims Support and Investigation Unit (NIAVE).
The investigation began following a report of domestic violence.
Police from the GNR carried out inquiries that determined the suspect had engaged in physical and psychological violence, as well as threats against the victim, a 41-year-old woman.
In the course of the operation, a warrant was executed, which resulted in the man’s arrest.
The suspect has already appeared before the Judicial Court of Penafiel, which ruled that he will await the proceedings in custody.
The GNR emphasizes that domestic violence is a public crime and reporting it is a collective responsibility.
