Don’t forget the IMI: There is an installment to pay this month.

If you own property, be informed that the second installment of the Municipal Property Tax (IMI) is due in August for those who owe more than 500 euros.

Property owners are required annually to pay the IMI to the Tax and Customs Authority for properties under their name, including houses, garages, and shops.

Payment deadlines depend on the total tax amount, as outlined on the public services portal:

  • By May 31 – if the amount is 100 euros or less (a single installment);
  • By May 31 and September 30 – if the amount ranges between 100 euros and 500 euros (two installments);
  • By May 31, August 31, and November 30 – if the amount exceeds 500 euros (three installments).

This year, the May deadline was postponed to June due to an energy blackout on April 28, which caused delays in issuing IMI bills.

You may also opt to pay the full tax amount in one go.

“The May billing includes the total amount and reference for paying the installments,” states the portal.

What happens if you miss the deadline?

Missing the IMI payment deadline could result in late payment interest or a fine, according to Article 116 of the General Regime on Tax Infractions.

Are there exemptions?

Yes. For permanent exemption, the following conditions must be met:

  • The family’s gross annual income must not exceed 2.3 times the annual Social Support Index (IAS), which is 16,824.50 euros (522.50 euros x 14 months x 2.3) in 2025;
  • The property must be the permanent residence, and its taxable value (VPT) should be equal to or less than 67,260.20 euros;
  • The exemption is automatically and annually granted by the tax authorities.

For temporary exemption, the new property must meet these conditions:

  • The VPT should not exceed 125,000 euros, and it must be your tax residence;
  • The family’s annual income should not surpass 153,000 euros.

The temporary exemption lasts for a maximum of 3 years and cannot be requested by families with state debts.

Furthermore, “Law No. 56/2023, dated October 6, 2023, permits a 2-year extension, subject to municipal assembly decisions.”

“This exemption can only be requested twice in a taxpayer’s or family’s lifetime,” as stated on the portal.
