Candidate for the presidency of the Setúbal City Council, Maria das Dores Meira, confirmed on Tuesday on her Facebook page the support of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) for the movement ‘Dores Meira – Setúbal de Volta’ in the municipal elections on October 12.
The lawyer, who previously served as president of the Setúbal municipality, regards this support as a “sign of the political breadth of a candidacy composed of people from various origins and political sensibilities, but also of the unequivocal work developed in the Setúbal municipality” during her previous terms.
“This and any other support from the democratic spectrum will be welcome,” she wrote, assuring, however, that this support will not interfere “with the project and the freedom” the movement has in Setúbal.
“The movement will always be independent, without party interference in its programmatic line, individual candidate choices, nor will it receive any financial support from party structures. We want Setúbal de Volta, with freedom and a lot of work to do,” she emphasizes further.
In the same post, the former Setúbal mayor, elected three times on the CDU lists between 2006 and 2021, revealed the program of the movement.
In addition to the PSD, Dores Meira also counts on the support of the CDS.
On Tuesday, July 15, the PSD announced its support for the independent candidacies of Isaltino Morais in Oeiras and the former CDU mayor Maria das Dores Meira in Setúbal, also confirming the candidacy of Luís Filipe Menezes in Gaia.
The decisions were made at a meeting of the PSD’s National Political Commission, which, through a statement, released the list of the last candidates supported by the social democrats for the municipal councils, with a view to the municipal elections on October 12 this year.

It should be noted that Maria das Dores Meira had to leave the Setúbal municipality in 2021 due to term limits. Meanwhile, she ran for the presidency of the Almada City Council without success, eventually leaving the CDU and forming the movement ‘Dores Meira – Setúbal de Volta’.
Besides Dores Meira, André Martins (CDU), the current president, Fernando José (PS), Lina Lopes (Chega), and Flávio Lança (Iniciativa Liberal) are also running for the Setúbal City Council.
