The railway service on the Douro Line between Marco de Canaveses and Peso da Régua will be suspended for five months, from November 3 until April 2026, due to modernization and electrification work. During this period, road transport will be provided.
“Due to modernization work on the Douro Line, managed by Infraestruturas de Portugal, for a period of five months, CP services will be replaced by direct buses between Caíde and Régua and buses stopping at all stations between Marco de Canaveses and Régua,” stated CP in a notice published on its website.
The transport company indicates that, “in the replacement road service, travel times may vary depending on weather and traffic conditions.”
Additionally, “bicycles, scooters, and wheelchairs are not allowed.”
“Transport of small pets is allowed if the animal is properly contained in a carrier that can be carried as hand luggage. Group tickets are not accepted in the replacement road service,” notes CP.

The project includes the enhancement, structural reinforcement, and lowering of the railway platform in the six tunnels along this section, with particular emphasis on the intervention in the Juncal Tunnel, the second largest in the National Railway Network, spanning 1,624 meters.
“These works are technically and logistically complex, conducting in the tunnels with limited space for machine movement and in more remote locations challenging for equipment setup and use. Given these constraints, it is essential to halt rail operations between Marco de Canaveses [Porto district] and Peso da Régua [Vila Real district] to ensure effective work execution,” reads a joint statement from CP and Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP).
