The Lisbon mayor has previously shared these plans in New York City, United States. Last September, Moedas met with New York City’s mayor, Eric Adams, to exchange “best practices” on issues pertaining to homelessness, sustainability, culture, and innovation.
Discussing sustainability, currently under construction in Lisbon, a poignant topic as New York also grapples with floods and inundations.
“We talked about our work, the largest project in Europe involving drainage tunnels for water to prevent flooding in Lisbon. I even showed him a video depicting these tunnels being constructed 70 meters underground in Lisbon. Eric Adams turned to me and said, ‘This is something we need to do as well. We haven’t achieved it yet, but it’s something New York should undertake to prevent flooding,'” the Lisbon mayor recounted at the time.
