In a statement released today, the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) reported a significant increase in speeding violations recorded in March, with 4,862 cases noted. This figure is more than double the incidents reported in the same month last year, marking an increase of 2,536 cases.
“These figures, from a preventative standpoint, are of particular concern to the PSP, as speeding continues to be a prevalent issue among the road traffic violations recorded and is a major contributor to road accident rates,” highlighted the security force.
In March, the PSP conducted checks on 68,337 drivers, 7,146 more than in 2024, and monitored 231,340 vehicles by radar, an increase of 20,964 from 2024. The total violations registered amounted to 23,115, averaging approximately 746 infractions per day, representing a 48% increase compared to the same month last year.
Additionally, the PSP conducted 18,736 alcohol tests, resulting in 460 citations for driving under the influence, 106 of which involved drivers with licenses for less than three years or professional drivers.
The PSP also noted 510 infractions for mobile phone use while driving, an increase of 89 compared to the same month in 2024. This equates to over 16 drivers being caught daily using their phones while driving.
During March, the PSP arrested 891 drivers for road-related offenses, including 505 for driving under the influence and 386 for driving without a valid license, which marks a 75% increase compared to arrest records from the same period in 2024.
Data on road accidents in March indicates an increase in the number of accidents (+138) and minor injuries, while severe injuries (-17) and fatalities (-2) decreased.
Within its jurisdiction, the PSP recorded 4,792 accidents in March, resulting in five fatalities, 38 serious injuries, and 1,421 minor injuries.
