Driving on Avenida Marginal? This Friday, avoid it (because of the rain).

The municipality of Oeiras has issued a warning for heavy rain and strong winds expected over the next two days, particularly on Friday afternoon.

“The Municipality of Oeiras and the Municipal Civil Protection Service alert to the forecast of heavy rain and strong wind in the Municipality of Oeiras on October 31 and November 1,” stated a communication on the municipality’s website.

Forecasts indicate that on Friday, October 31, “very cloudy or overcast skies with periods of rain, sometimes heavy starting from late morning” are expected.

“On Saturday, November 1, very cloudy or overcast skies are expected, gradually decreasing in cloudiness in the North and Center regions, with persistent and sometimes heavy rain, gradually decreasing in intensity starting in the morning,” the statement further explains.

In response to these forecasts, the municipality offers preventive recommendations, such as avoiding movement near the coastline and riverside areas and exercising special caution if you must pass through these areas.

Regarding driving, avoid parking vehicles on the seafront and pay attention to the possible formation of water accumulation on roads, adopting a defensive driving style and reduced speed.

Pedestrians are urged not to cross flooded areas, to be cautious when moving through wooded areas due to possible falling branches, and to ensure that loose structures like scaffolding, billboards, and other suspended structures are securely fastened.

Avoid any maritime activity such as fishing and water sports, maintain distance from equipment, metal networks, and pipes, railway tracks or any other metal course that could conduct electric discharge over a considerable distance, never seek shelter under a tall, isolated tree during a thunderstorm, and follow the instructions of security forces as other preventive measures to adopt.

Due to heavy rain, the IPMA has issued an orange warning for the northern and central regions from 3:00 a.m. on Friday to 12:00 a.m. on Saturday and a yellow warning only for the districts of Lisbon, Santarém, and Castelo Branco from 3:00 a.m. on Friday to 6:00 a.m. on Saturday.

The worsening weather conditions are associated with the forecast of urban flooding, floods, and contamination of potable water sources by debris resulting from rural fires.
