The Polícia Judiciária (PJ) confirmed on Sunday the arrest, in collaboration with the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP), of a man suspected of killing another man with a hammer in Corroios, Seixal municipality, during the early hours. Authorities indicated that the crime stemmed from drug-related conflicts and that the 40-year-old victim had been released from prison a few months ago.
The suspect is 27 years old and is heavily indicted on charges of qualified homicide.
In a statement, the PJ noted that it was alerted by the PSP at around 03:00 to a violent incident in a bar in Quinta das Lagoas, Corroios, which resulted in one fatality.
“Investigations conducted thus far have revealed that the assaults, committed with a hammer, resulted from conflicts related to drug trafficking”, the statement reveals, adding that “both the suspect and the victim have criminal records for such crimes”.
“The victim was released from prison a few months ago after serving a sentence for robbery and possession of a prohibited weapon”, it further reports.
The suspect is currently being held at the PJ headquarters for all necessary procedures to be conducted to fully clarify the facts under investigation.
The Civil Protection confirmed that the victim died after being struck with a hammer on the head. Meanwhile, the PSP informed the Lusa agency that the homicide occurred “on the public highway”.
The victim was assaulted on the street in the early hours of Sunday.
