Duarte was an “early riser” and was born after a “push” from Rádio Comercial

The Coimbra Local Health Unit (ULS de Coimbra) announced this Thursday the birth of “the most famous baby of yesterday morning.” The previous day, the baby’s mother called Rádio Comercial while on her way to the Maternidade Daniel de Matos and received a ‘push’ from the hosts.

Duarte “was the most famous baby of yesterday morning when Pedro Ribeiro requested on Rádio Comercial to clear the way for the mother Catarina,” reported the health unit on Facebook.

The organization noted, however, that while the baby “announced himself, he then made everyone wait,” being born only on Thursday morning at 7:00 AM.

“Apparently, he is as early riser as the Rádio Comercial Morning Team, isn’t he, Nuno Markl, Vera Fernandes, and Vasco Palmeirim?” ULS de Coimbra joked.

The entity shared that Duarte was born weighing 3.185 kilograms and is “ready to embrace the world.”

“Mother and child are well, and we will continue to care for them until they can make the return journey home – to the sound of Rádio Comercial to uphold tradition. Here, you can continue to count on ULS de Coimbra to be born safely within the National Health Service! Long live Duarte and many congratulations to his entire family!” they added.

It should be noted that after two years of increase, the number of births in Portugal decreased last year to 80,059, which is 1,059 fewer than in 2023, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Between 2023 and 2024, the number of births only increased in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (+2.4%), in the Oeste and Tejo Valley (+1.2%), in Greater Lisbon (+0.9%), and in the Setúbal Peninsula (+0.1%), according to the same source.

“In the remaining regions, a decrease was observed, which was more pronounced in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (-8.7%), but also in the North (-3.5%) and in Alentejo and the Algarve (both cases, -2.4%),” according to the INE.

The available data also indicated that 82,911 births took place in a hospital, while 841 occurred at home, and 307 happened elsewhere.
