A sailing vessel under the Dutch flag ran aground early Monday morning on the beach of Nazaré, in the district of Leiria. The two occupants of the vessel are reported to be unharmed.
A statement from the National Maritime Authority (AMN) on Facebook noted that the causes of the incident are “unknown.” The statement added that in response to an alert received at 6:30 a.m., crew from the Nazaré Lifeboat Station and elements from the Nazaré Maritime Police Command were immediately activated.
Upon arrival, it was confirmed that the two sailors aboard the yacht were physically well and did not require medical assistance. Later that morning, operations were conducted to remove the vessel from the beach, and it was subsequently towed to the Port of Nazaré.
The owner has been informed that they may only resume navigation after a thorough inspection to ensure the yacht’s seaworthiness. The Nazaré Maritime Police Command has taken charge of the incident, the authorities concluded in the statement.
