An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter near Celorico da Beira, was felt in several municipalities in the northern and central regions of Portugal during the early hours of Saturday. This event flooded social media with accounts from those who experienced it.
The earthquake occurred at 12:38 AM and had its epicenter about four kilometers west-southwest of Celorico da Beira, in the district of Guarda. According to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA),
“This earthquake, based on the information available so far, did not cause any personal or material damage and was felt with a maximum intensity of IV/V (modified Mercalli scale) in the municipality of Covilhã (Castelo Branco),” highlighted the IPMA.
It was also felt with less intensity in the municipalities of Aveiro, Santa Maria da Feira, Mealhada, Ovar, Vale de Cambra (Aveiro), Sertã (Castelo Branco), Guarda (Guarda), Alijó (Vila Real), Cinfães, Nelas and Viseu (Viseu).
