The European Central Bank (ECB) announced that its Governing Council has selected two potential themes for future euro banknotes, following consultations with experts and the public.
The themes are “European Culture,” focusing on Europe’s shared cultural heritage and renowned Europeans, and “Rivers and Birds,” celebrating the resilience and diversity of Europe’s natural ecosystems.
The ECB is inviting designers from across Europe to participate in the competition starting July 15, 2025.
“The euro is more than just a currency: it symbolizes European unity and diversity. With this competition, we invite designers from across Europe to craft the future of our banknotes, reflecting our common cultural identity and natural heritage,” stated ECB President Christine Lagarde.
The application platform will remain open until 11:00 AM in Lisbon on August 18, the ECB added.
The ECB’s Governing Council will decide on the final design by the end of 2026, following a public survey.
The current euro banknotes’ theme is “Ages and Styles,” featuring windows, doors, and bridges inspired by architectural styles from various periods in European history.
The competition, open to graphic designers residing in the European Union (EU), comprises two phases: an application phase and a design proposal phase.
During the application phase, designers must meet specific requirements outlined in the competition announcement. Applicants will be evaluated based on their qualifications and achievements.
Selected designers will be invited to participate in the second phase and submit their proposals.
The competition jury, made up of independent experts, will assess the proposals and select up to five per theme.
Upon the competition’s conclusion, the ECB will invite public feedback on the selected designs.
The process of producing the new banknotes will take several years before they enter circulation.
